Reasons Why cats Like To Knock Things Over
Share
If you have cats (we’ll take a wild guess and say that you do), you must have noticed that cats aren’t the most organized pets.
They love chasing moving objects and taking small things and knocking them over.
This is something you’ll get used to when you own a cat.
Cats like to knock things on your desk and lay in bed. Every cat owner felt curious about knowing the reason behind that. We are here to crack the code behind that behavior.
Be curious no more.
Here we go.
THE HIDDEN CONNECTION: Hunting and knocking things over.
Cats are natural born hunters. This is a known fact for all and this justify why they jump on every moving object.
Things would be clear once we look at it from cat’s perspective, she probably thinks of every inanimate object as something that she can run---regardless of the fact that it is safe or not.
The cat is entertained by any moving object, they like chasing. That’s all what it is.
What we mean by this, is the cat doesn’t know and probably doesn’t care if the things she knocks over is precious, expensive or meaningful to you.
They see it, they want it, they get it.
THEY PROBABLY DO IT TO GRAB YOUR ATTENTION
Here is another reason. They want to see your reaction about that.
If the cat did that during an unusual time, they might need something from you, it can be signaling for wanting food. Pawing at things is probably how your kitty gets your attention.
Your cat might follow this pattern if it has worked with you in the past.
This usually happens when they are bored.
It’s preferable to feed your cat on schedule and enrich their environment to avoid the boredom that leads to unexpected behavior.
Spending some quality time playing with your baby cat is healthy to feed her need for attention.
But if she does that all the time, we advise you not to show any reaction.
This can be challenging for you; however, the reinforcement your cat gets from knocking things over is removed which means that she’ll have to find an alternative way to get your attention.
TO PREVENT THAT: LEAVE YOUR VALUABLE OBJECTS OUT OF REACH.
If your cat have a habit of knocking things over and it’s too late for negative reinforcement, we have few things you can do to reduce it.
This can be very frustrating.
First of all, you’ll have to keep all valuable object out of reach and fragile ones for the cat’s safety.
If you give your cat enough attention during playtime, this will release their energy in a healthier way.
We suggest getting your feline some toys to play with them instead of looking for objects to knock over.
TO SUM THINGS UP: WHY DO CATS LIKE TO KNOCK THINGS OVER?
There is no official answer to this question. However, the reasons we mentioned are the most common ones.
You shouldn’t scold or punish your cat for knocking things over.
The best way to deal with this is by ignoring the cat and giving it attention. If the cat knocks things over when she’s hungry, try to feed him by schedule.
